Monitoring, oxygen & early deterioration

Pulse oximetry estimates oxygen saturation; it does not measure ventilation. Supplemental oxygen can delay desaturation during hypoventilation. Capnography measures exhaled carbon dioxide and helps detect ventilation changes.

This excerpt is from the Monitoring lesson. Full lessons include related concepts, clinical applications, and references.

Which monitor more directly assesses ventilation: pulse oximetry or capnography?

Form your answer, then reveal the explanation.

In the Study Room, filter flash cards by topic and focus and track what you know.

Practice & Understand

Five questions. Reasoning behind every choice.

Selected from the RA Study Room question bank. Choose an answer and check it to see why each option is correct or incorrect. These are independent practice questions, not actual ARRT examination items.

0 of 5 answered

Monitoring, oxygen & early deterioration
1. After procedural sedation, a patient receiving oxygen has SpO2 98%, respiratory rate 6/min, a rising end-tidal CO2 trend, and reduced responsiveness. Which finding should drive the immediate assessment?
Contrast agents, reactions & rescue principles
2. Four patients are scheduled for IV iodinated contrast. Which history most directly warrants a specific review of prior allergic-like contrast reaction risk?
Dose, concentration & infusion calculations
3. Calculation exercise: 2 mL of a 5 mg/mL stock solution is diluted to a final volume of 10 mL. What volume of the diluted solution contains a prescribed 3 mg dose?
Laboratory interpretation & specimens
4. A biopsy sample is needed for both histology and bacterial culture. Which plan is best?
Assessment, consent & patient partnership
5. A patient signed consent yesterday but now clearly refuses the planned procedure before sedation. What is the best next step?

This small sample is not a readiness assessment or a prediction of examination performance.
